Check Your Child's IEP Progress
Feb 07, 2025
Why February is the Perfect Time to Check Your Child's IEP Progress
Most schools are officially halfway through the school year.
While your child's IEP team should be monitoring progress throughout the year, this midpoint presents the perfect opportunity to take a closer look at how things are really going.
As both an IEP advocate, SLPA, and a special needs parent myself, I know how crucial these check-ins can be for ensuring your child stays on track.
Why February?
February offers a unique advantage for IEP reviews.
You've got enough data from the first semester to spot patterns, but there's still plenty of time to make meaningful adjustments before the school year ends.
If your child isn't progressing as expected, waiting until the annual IEP meeting might mean missing crucial opportunities for support.
Signs It's Time for a Review
Here are some indicators that you should request a mid-year review:
- Your child's progress reports show minimal advancement toward IEP goals
- You're noticing increased frustration or anxiety about school
- New challenges have emerged since the last IEP meeting
- The current accommodations don't seem to be having the intended effect
- You're receiving consistent feedback from teachers about ongoing struggles
How to Request a Review
You don't need to wait for the school to suggest a review–
You have the right to request one at any time.
Send a written request to your child's case manager or special education director, clearly stating your concerns and desire for a team meeting.
Remember to keep a copy for your records.
Preparing for Your Review
Before the meeting:
- Gather any relevant documents, including progress reports, recent assessments, and work samples
- Review your child's current IEP goals and note specific concerns
- Talk with your child about their experiences and challenges
- Document any new behaviors or challenges you've observed at home
- Prepare specific questions about your child's progress and current supports
Making the Most of Your Review
During the meeting, focus on data-driven discussions.
Ask for specific examples of how your child is progressing toward each goal.
If progress isn't where it should be, work with the team to identify why and what adjustments might help.
This could include modifying goals, adding new accommodations, or adjusting current services.
