Why You Need to Start Advocating Now (Not in Spring)

Jul 03, 2025

Every spring, my inbox floods with emails from parents saying:

“I wish I’d called you sooner.”

“I didn’t realize how long this would take.”

“I thought the school would handle it, but they didn’t.”

And I get it. You’re hoping the school will step up. And it feels like there’s time.

But here’s the truth:

Waiting until spring to start advocating for your child’s IEP needs can mean missing an entire year of services your child deserves.

Let’s talk about IEP timelines:

Assessments take time.
Schools legally have 60 days to complete assessments after you sign consent—and that’s 60 school days, not calendar days.

Meetings get delayed.
Schools can drag their feet, reschedule, and push timelines to the max. Meanwhile, your child is still waiting for help.

Implementation takes time.
Even after the IEP is signed, services often don’t start immediately.

If you wait until the spring to start, your child may not receive the help they need until the next school year.

That is why summer is the perfect time to look at your child’s needs and plan.

You can gather data, get private assessments if needed, and prepare your requests so you can hit the ground running in August.

Experienced parents know this—that’s why my August and September calendars are already booking up.

They don’t wait to see if the school will magically fix things. They take action now to ensure their child gets the support they deserve.

Your Child Deserves Better Than “Maybe Next Year”

Don’t let another year slip by hoping things will improve on their own.

Don’t let your child sit in a classroom without the tools and support they need.

If you know your child needs more support, now is the time to get on my calendar.

Let’s make a plan together so your child can start the year strong—and so you can spend next spring celebrating progress, not scrambling for services.
