Can you believe it? For so many of you, the end of the school year is just around the corner!

I know you’ve seen firsthand the whirlwind of activities and emotions that come with wrapping up the school year and transitioning into summer break.

As parents of children with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), you already wear multiple hats: advocate, cheerleader, and superhero all rolled into one.

Your dedication to ensuring the best possible education for your child is truly inspiring, and I'm here to provide you with the support and guidance you need as we approach the end of the school year.

The transition from school to summer break can be particularly challenging for children with special needs. It's a time of change, uncertainty, and excitement, and it's essential to have a plan in place to ensure a smooth transition and set the stage for a fun and fulfilling summer ahead.

Here are actionable steps and strategies that will help you wrap up the school year like a pro and prepare for an epic summer filled with growth, exploration, and endless possibilities.

  1. Review your child's progress. Take a moment to sit down with your child's teachers and review their progress throughout the year. Celebrate the victories, no matter how small, and identify any areas that may need a little extra attention over the summer.

  1. Check those IEP goals. Grab a copy of your child's IEP and review the goals you set at the beginning of the year. Have they been met? Are there any goals that still need work? Use this time to make any necessary adjustments or additions.

  1. Communicate with your IEP team because communication is key! Reach out to your child's teachers, therapists, and support staff to discuss any concerns or questions you may have going into the summer break. Collaboration is crucial in ensuring your child's success, so don't be afraid to speak up.

With the chaos of the end of the school year and the excitement of summer break, it's easy to let things slip through the cracks. Stay organized by keeping all important documents, emails, and correspondence in one place.

Most importantly, don't forget to take care of yourself. The end of the school year can be a stressful time, so make sure to carve out some time for self-care. Whether it's a bubble bath, a walk in the park, or a night out with friends, make sure to recharge your own batteries so you can continue to be the superhero your child needs.
